In April of this year, India overtook China as the most populous nation on earth.

The United Nations estimates 1,425,775,850 people now live in the country. India, however, has never truly embraced the world’s most popular sport - football.

India is a cricket country. An astonishing 93% of sport watched on TV there is cricket. The Indian Super League (ISL), however, has a plan to change this. 

What was once a glorified mid-season tournament for ageing stars is now a fully-fledged 12-team division that sits at the top of the Indian football pyramid. 

The 2023/23 season, which starts this week, promises to be the most exciting, and important, yet. Clubs have spent more money over the off-season than ever before. Better players are joining. The quality is rising.

ISL chiefs want the league to become Asia’s biggest and they are using Major League Soccer as a template to make that happen.
