Corinthians have had big name players before. Indeed, this is the Brazilian club that sensationally signed Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez two decades ago.
More recently, Timão signed Memphis Depay in a deal that initially excited the club’s fervent fanbase. Supporters were spotted replicating the Dutch forward’s trademark fingers-in-ears goal celebration. Some even wore headbands.
Quickly, though, Depay became a symbol of Corinthians’ slide towards relegation which shows no sign of slowing.
The Sao Paulo-based side have won just two of their last 11 Brasileiro fixtures and find themselves stuck in the bottom three of the table. The prospect of Corinthians dropping down to Brazil’s second tier is real.
