The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) should be kicking off this weekend.

CHAN is an international tournament for domestic-based players in Africa. A domestic-based Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that was to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda this year.

Saturday (February 1st) was meant to be the opening game. However, CHAN 2024 has since been pushed back six months to August. It’s debatable whether the tournament will happen then too.

Infrastructure and facilities (a lack thereof) are the immediate concern with Kenya’s CHAN-related construction work reportedly well behind schedule.

Furthermore, though, there is a growing discourse over the future viability of the tournament. Could CHAN be squeezed out as the global football landscape shifts?
