🗽 Palmeiras fans take over Times Square, 'Immigrant City FC' respond to ICE raids, Hot Woltemade Summer | VAR
All the football headlines and viral moments you might have missed!
You never know what you’ll stumble across in Times Square - the Naked Cowboy, an off-brand Mickey Mouse… thousands of Palmeiras fans?!
Supporters of the Brazilian club took over New York City’s most famous public space ahead of their opening Club World Cup match against Porto on Sunday.
VAR (Valuable Alternative Reading) is a weekly newsletter sent every Monday reviewing all the good stuff you might have missed from the footballing weekend!

Elsewhere, Miguel Herrara produced a trademark celebration, Miami Beach became Boca Beach and Dan Burn belongs in a western.
Let’s take a look at everything 👇
Something in NYC 🗽
New York City belongs to Palmeiras now!
Their fans mobbed Times Square before taking on Porto at MetLife Stadium which is definitely in New York City (don’t fact check that) on Sunday. The Brazilian club has one of the biggest supports at the tournament!
Something promoted
You’ve seen an open-top bus tour to celebrate a trophy win, but how about an open-top tourist train?
NK Novigrad took to the streets to celebrate their promotion to the Croatian second division in unique fashion. It’s the flares that make it!
Something goofy
Bayern Munich are based in Orlando for the Club World Cup, explaining why a couple of recognisable characters turned up to a training session on Friday.
After all, the Club World Cup is a Mickey Mouse competition…
Something to stay top
Excitement at the top of the J League as Kashima Antlers scored a stoppage time equaliser to keep hold of first place in the table!
Leo Ceara equalised against Sanfrecce Hiroshima to maintain Antlers’ advantage. They haven’t won the Japanese title since 2016. Is this their year?
Something embarrassing 🙈
Arturo Vidal (yes, he’s still playing) made an oopsie for Colo-Colo over the weekend, finding the back of his own net.
The former Barcelona and Juventus midfielder reacted with typical humility, arguing with his own goalkeeper. Don’t back down, double down!
Something in protest ✊
‘Immigrant City’ read shirts worn by Angel City’s players and fans before their NWSL game against North Carolina on Saturday.
The match was played on the same day that ‘No Kings Day’ protests were staged across the US in protest at Donald Trump and the ICE raids happening in Los Angeles in particular.
Something on the beach 🏝️
Miami Beach is now Boca Beach.
Thousands of Argentines marched on South Florida’s most famous stretch of sand before Boca Juniors’ opening Club World Cup game against Benfica on Monday.
Something cowboy 🤠
Dan Burn is a Newcastle United cult hero, a Carabao Cup winner… and now a cowboy, apparently.
There’s no context for this, as far as I’m aware. Just enjoy it for what it is - funny.
Something surreal
Soccer Aid is quite the event. Where else would you see Man Utd’s all-time top scorer share a pitch with Bella Ramsey and a YouTuber called Angry Ginge?
To be fair, Rooney shared a pitch with Angry Ginge for years. He was called Paul Scholes.
Something shirtless
Luis Enrique is weird. Brilliant, but undeniably weird.
The PSG manager was spotted walking around barefoot and shirtless around his team’s training session. Apparently this is called “earthing,” which is a method of connecting the human body to the earth's energy.
You do you, Lucho!
Something blue 🔵
Mirandes claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Real Oviedo in the first leg of the La Liga promotion playoff final.
Check out the scene as Oviedo supporters welcomed the team bus for the match! This is a club that was saved by its fans in 2003. They would have gone bust without them!
Something historic
It wasn’t to be for the Dominican Republic as they played (and lost) their first-ever Gold Cup game, but they still managed to make an impact!
Los Quisqueyanos have a talented squad that includes the likes of former Real Madrid forward Mariano Diaz and former Barcelona defender Junior Firpo.
After fighting back to 3-2 from 2-0 against Mexico, the comeback looked on! Don’t write them off.
Something confusing 🤔
It was a tough weekend for the Auckland FC admin.
Watching their cross-city rivals Auckland City lose 10-0 to Bayern Munich might have been fun had the two clubs not been mixed up by basically everyone in the world…
Something iconic
Sunday’s Gold Cup clash between Costa Rica and Suriname was complete chaos and Miguel Herrera didn’t disappoint either!
Costa Rica scored the decisive goal in the 12th minute of stoppage time to win 4-3 and Herrera let rip with his celebration!
Something burnt 🥵
Erling Haaland has spent the last three seasons burning Premier League defenders, but the Norwegian goal-bot had no defence against the sun!
In fairness, Haaland isn’t in the habit of using sunscreen in Manchester…
Something U21
It’s been Hot Nick Woltemade Summer at the U21 Euros with the 6ft 6” striker scoring four goals in just two games!
Woltemade netted in a 4-2 win over Czechia on Sunday just a few days after he registered a hat trick against Slovenia. The new Peter Crouch?
Some TSD content you might have missed… 🗞️
🇳🇿 The worst team at the 2025 Club World Cup prove why the tournament actually matters
Auckland City, a semi-pro team, have been drawn in a group with Bayern, Benfica and Boca!
This tournament is for everybody but UEFA. Palmeiras supporters were out in force. Loved that. More than the matches to be fair ;)
Auckland FC’s color scheme is terrible…
