Over 24,000 fans watched Auckland FC’s first game - and first win - as an A League team on opening weekend of the new 2024/25 season.

The hope is that these sort of scenes at Mount Smart Stadium will become the norm for the division’s latest expansion franchise. In fact, the A League is counting on it.

Auckland FC’s expansion is just one part of a new strategy to save the top flight of football in Australia and New Zealand which has hard times recently. 

It’s a strategy that promises a new “football-focused” approach (whatever that means), new star players and the planned introduction of the division’s 14th team in 2025. 

If it fails, the A League could disappear. The stakes couldn’t be any higher.
