Gwangju are flying high in their debut AFC Champions League Elite campaign!
There are some familiar names near the top of the two tables in this season’s new-look AFC Champions League Elite.
Japanese champions Vissel Kobe are up there. So too are Al Hilal with their star-studded squad that includes Neymar, Joao Cancelo, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ruben Neves and Kalidou Koulibaly.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr have also started the continental campaign well.
Gwangju, however, are in new territory. Founded just 13 years ago, the South Korean outfit are sitting second in the ACL Elite’s Eastern section having won three of their first four games. This is their debut season in the competition.
Coached by a manager labelled the ‘Korean Mourinho,’ Gwangju’s success comes at a good time for a country facing a crossroads as a football nation.
