Less than a decade ago, Chile were kings of South American international football.

La Roja won back-to-back Copa America titles in 2015 and 2016, beating Lionel Messi and Argentina in the final both times. They boasted stars like Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal and were a force to be reckoned with. It was a golden generation.

However, the memory of this all-conquering Chilean national team has faded fast.

Far from being South American kings, La Roja are now CONMEBOL also-rans.

They currently sitting second bottom of World Cup qualifying. Chile also exited this summer’s Copa America at the group stage without winning a single game. They didn’t even score a goal.

After a golden generation, Chilean football has entered an era of decline - and not just at national team level. How can this be explained?
