Turkey are used to being major tournament dark horses.
They have been tipped for success at several World Cups and European Championships, but have a track record of underwhelming when most is expected of them.
At Euro 2024, though, Turkey have surpassed pre-tournament predictions, making a run to the quarter-finals where they will face the Netherlands on Saturday.
Only three times before have The Crescent Stars made it this far at a major tournament. Turkey have fallen at the first hurdle of the last two Euros and haven’t played at a World Cup for over two decades.
This is a country with a population of 85 million. A country with a passion for football and a league that attracts big names - like Jose Mourinho, most recently. So why aren’t the Turkish national team better?Â
