John Herdman believes Indonesia is “ready” to qualify for the 2030 World Cup.

The 50-year-old said so repeatedly at his unveiling as the new head coach of Team Garuda. Herdman had other job offers, including one from Honduras, but this is the project that caught his imagination most.

Herdman has experience in ending World Cup droughts having guided Canada to their first in 36 years in 2022. Indonesia hasn’t played at a World Cup since 1938, and that was as the Dutch East Indies.

So will the blueprint that worked so well for Canada also work for Indonesia? There’s good reason for Herdman to be optimistic.
